At Wildfang, we daily celebrate the misfits and uplift folks who are unabashedly themselves. In honor of the spookiest month, our October theme for Free Speech was : WE ARE THE WEIRDOS, MISTER. We heard stories of marching to the beat of your own drum and letting that freak flag fly high. Moments in people’s lives when they’ve turned to the naysayers and said ‘you do you, boo– and I’m gonna do me.”
With the audience buzzing in excitement, our 5 amazing storytellers took to our mini stage to dive right in and share some weirdo tales.
1. JACINDA THOMAS: “TIGGER, IS THAT YOU?”
Born in South Korea and raised in rural Oregon, Jacinda is passionate about the question, “What Would Leslie Knope Do?” She is a writer, entrepreneur, and founder of Wild Ruckus, a marketing agency obsessed with helping business owners turn strangers into paying customers. With 3 incredible nieces, too many country songs on her Spotify playlists to be “cool”, and 1 incurable passion for stories, Jacinda was stoked to share about how people sort of treat you either like a zoo animal or a walking miracle – all in all, people notice.
2. LAUREN CROW: “STICK TO YOUR GUNS”
Lauren is a Technicolor weirdo and photographer with an aesthetic flair for the 70’s photographing intimacy and sex. www.laurencrowphoto.com
She talks about following your heart when others try to discourage you from being your authentic self.
3. LINDSEY MURPHY: “THIS STORY ISN’T TRUE”
Lindsey E. Murphy is the creator and host of The Fab Lab With Crazy Aunt Lindsey, YouTube’s #1 kids science show that’s about to celebrate its 7 year next Saturday November 4. She is the first place winner of this years PitchBlack and her show is fabulous and adorable and amazing and you should totally go watch and share it with all of your kids and friends BECAUSE her secret agenda is to normalize women and people of color in spaces they’ve been told were not for them. Starting with STEM. Lindsey shares about the lies by which we all abide and spend our lives trying to escape … and also original sin.
4. GLYNIS OLSON “HERE’S WHAT’S UP…. YOU CAN DO IT”
Glynis is a reformed self doubter, reluctant role model, irreverent woman, and unexpected entrepreneur. She also owns fingerbang! www.fingerbangpdx.com
Glynis’ story is about how belief in oneself (and ones ability to listen actively to that belief) is pretty fucking weird in the world today.
5. BARBIE WU: “MAN MADE WEIRDO”
Barbie is an actor in Portland. She enjoys being with kind folks, babies, and cats. Barbie shares about moments where she knew she was different, and that you don’t choose the weirdo life– the weirdo life chooses you.
