Hyper vivid color combos, bold print, and funky art were poppin’ all over the Spring Summer ‘14 catwalks—Céline took inspiration from Brassaï’s graffiti work, top-to-toe paint palette prints were seen at Chanel, and art from the likes of Jeanne Detallante, Gabriel Specter, and El Mac appeared all over the show at Prada. And in true Wildfang style we took our own spin on the biggest trend for the summer, looking to the early 90’s for inspiration to bring you the WF Pack Collection.
Remember how jealous you were of Will Smith’s iconic zebra print Zubaz and multi-colored windbreakers in The Fresh Prince, or how desperate you were to rock that hat 2-da-back and graffiti tees-to-the-knee like our girls from TLC? Well, we hear you! Take it back to the ’90s with the Wildfang gang and sport the Wild Pack Tee with some acid wash cut-off overalls and your baddest high top sneakers, or team the Scattered Pack Embroidered Crew with boyfriend jeans and a pair of slides.
To create the playful prints and graphics for our WF Pack Collection, we collaborated with Portland-based surface design studio Pattern People. We caught up with Claudia and Jessie to chat about their inspiration behind the designs and their fave pieces from the collection.
We think that ’90s fashion is totally back in style and we can see this come through in your designs for the WF Pack Collection, what was your inspiration?
We were looking at shows such as Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, In Living Color, Saved by the Bell, and Seinfeld, as well as old computer graphics, and rave culture. The research phase was obviously so much fun!
If you could see one trend from the past make a comeback, what would it be?
Scrunchies! Although, those are probably already back.
What is your favorite piece in the collection and what would you team it up with?
The black sweatshirt with embroidered wolf mascot of course. We’d pair that with a long full skirt in denim, a la Elaine Benes from Seinfeld, some flatforms and of course a big ponytail held with a shiny black scrunchie.
What is your fave summer trend and number one on your shopping list?
Well, we’re always looking at prints so anything with daisies, or photographic florals mixed with plaids.
What can we expect next from Pattern People?
We’ve just teamed up with make-up company, LAQA & Co. and have some cool products coming out. We also have some secret crazy projects that are in the works so stay tuned!
